Dissertation

Structural Sources of Anaphora and Sameness (University of Chicago, 2018)

My dissertation argues for an approach to DP structure and relativization in which anaphoric indices may be structurally encoded in different ways to facilitate anaphora both within and across languages. The proposal is motivated by the syntax of anaphoric modification, degree expressions, embedded equatives, and the interaction between them. The dissertation further accounts for structural and morphological differences between restrictive relatives and as-relatives, as well as the postsyntactic inflectional behavior of complex attributive degree modifiers in a range of environments. The primary languages of investigation are English, German, and Washo.
